In June of 2002, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops met in Dallas and discussed the issue of sexual abuse of minors. As a result, the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People was adopted which requires all dioceses to establish “safe environment” programs.
As part of the safe environment program instituted by the Archdiocese of Newark, every parish in the diocese must participate in a training program called “Protecting God’s Children”.
The Protecting God’s Children program educates and trains adults in the parish, including clergy, religious, teachers, staff, volunteers and parents. All adults involved in parish ministry who have contact with children are required to attend this training workshop one time.
Through the use of videos and discussion, the workshop addresses sexual abuse, the means for creating a safe environment for children and how to respond to a suspected case of child abuse. This workshop is very informative, very powerful and will help raise awareness on how we can protect children.
Throughout the year, Protecting God's Children workshops are offered by Sister Christine Tobin. Call the Parish Center at (201) 327-0976 for times, dates, and to register.
It is recommended that participants save a spot in Protecting God's Children by registering in advance. (The workshop is free.)
